Our Approach

Environmental stewardship is integral to responsible mining and to the long-term sustainability of our business.

Our approach focuses on avoiding environmental impacts wherever possible and minimizing, mitigating, and restoring impacts where avoidance is not feasible. We recognize that strong environmental performance supports operational resilience, strengthens stakeholder trust, and contributes to long-term value creation.

In 2025, AGM recorded another year without a significant environmental incident, reflecting the effectiveness of our environmental management systems and operational controls.

Our Environmental Policy guides our commitment to regulatory compliance, pollution prevention, resource efficiency, responsible waste management, and continuous improvement.

2025 Highlights

  • Zero significant environmental incidents
  • 96% recycled water used in the process plant
  • 78 ha of land under active rehabilitation
  • 95% MinCom certification score for environmental audit
  • 2% increase in the proportion of solar energy consumed from the national grid compared to 2024

Compliance & Environmental Management

Galiano complies with all applicable environmental laws and regulations and aligns its practices with recognized international standards, including IFC Performance Standards, World Bank Group Environmental, Health and Safety Guidelines for Mining, the International Cyanide Management Code, and World Health Organization drinking water guidelines.

Environmental performance is monitored and reported regularly, with monthly and annual environmental performance reports submitted to Ghana’s Environmental Protection Authority.  Regular environmental inspections and verification visits provide additional oversight and support compliance.

The AGM Environmental Management Systems provide a structured framework for planning, monitoring, reporting, and continual improvement. The system follows the ISO 14001:2026 Plan-Do-Check-Act framework and continues progressing toward certification.

Climate Resilience

Galiano is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions while strengthening the resilience of our operations to climate-related risks. We focus on improving energy efficiency, optimizing water use, and evaluating opportunities to increase access to lower-carbon energy sources.

In 2025, AGM’s Scope 1 greenhouse gas emissions decreased to 0.79 ktCO₂e/oz Au from 1.09 ktCO₂e/oz Au in 2024, calculated in accordance with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories.

Energy

Our energy strategy focuses on reducing energy intensity, improving equipment performance, and identifying opportunities to incorporate renewable and lower-carbon energy sources where practical.

Total energy consumption at AGM decreased to  0.24 GJ/t ore milled in 2025, compared with 0.26 GJ/t ore milled in 2024.

Water Stewardship

Water is a critical resource for both mining operations and surrounding communities.

We are committed to responsible water stewardship through efficient water management, recycling, monitoring, and community collaboration. While AGM is not located in a water-stressed region, we recognize the importance of supporting access to clean water in nearby communities.

Water recycling remains a key component of our approach. In 2025, recycled water accounted for 96% of process plant water use, helping reduce freshwater withdrawals and improve overall water efficiency.

Waste Management

Our Waste Management Plan emphasizes waste reduction, reuse, recycling, and finally responsible disposal practices when it is the only available option. Where disposal is carried out, we utilise engineering controls, monitoring programs, and containment systems to prevent environmental impacts and protect surrounding ecosystems.

All process tailings are managed within AGM’s Tailings Storage Facility, which is operated in accordance with regulatory requirements and subject to ongoing independent review and oversight, including audits by certified engineers under the oversight of the Engineer of Record. In addition, the Independent Tailings Review Panel provides expert guidance on the management of potential safety, engineering, and environmental risks.

Biodiversity

Biodiversity management at AGM is guided by our Environmental Management Plans and executed through the Biodiversity Implementation Plan. We minimize land disturbance where possible, implement controlled vegetation clearing procedures, and undertake progressive rehabilitation throughout the life of mine.

AGM operations are not located within or adjacent to any protected areas or designated conservation areas of concern. Buffer zones are maintained around nearby conservation-sensitive areas, where applicable, to reduce potential direct impacts on protected ecosystems. No exploration or operational activities are undertaken within protected areas.

Species of conservation concern are monitored in accordance with national and international requirements, and biodiversity assessments incorporate both IUCN Red List classifications and national conservation frameworks.

Progressive rehabilitation activities focus on stabilizing disturbed land, controlling erosion, re-establishing vegetation, and supporting long-term ecosystem recovery. Ongoing monitoring informs adaptive management and helps ensure rehabilitation objectives are achieved.
