Ghana
Ghana is the oldest, democratic independent state in Africa, south of the Sahara. The country achieved independence in March 1957 and it has a stable and functioning constitutional democracy. The most recent parliamentary and Presidential elections took place in December 2024, with John Dramani Mahama of the opposition National Democratic Congress taking office. The country has a free press. As Africa's largest gold producer, the country produced ~4 million ounces of gold in 2023 with gold contributing over 90% of the country’s total mineral exports and making up 49% of the country's total export value. It has a long history of large-scale gold mining with stable and well legislated mining tenure, royalty and tax laws. Ghana has a highly trained mining workforce at all levels of operation, offering modern infrastructure compared with most African countries, including water, electricity and mobile networks as well as a good network of roads and highways. Mines are operated by some of the world’s largest gold companies including Gold Fields, AngloGold and Newmont.
